What to see and Do
Beaches
Your nearest beaches are:
Westward Ho! – great for surfing, rock-pooling and amusements
Instow – no big waves- so good for little ones. Easy to park for a quick visit but watch parking attendants if there for more than one hour. Great place to watch the sunset and have a meal overlooking the water or a Hocking’s icecream!
Further away are Bude, Woolacombe, Croyde, Saunton and Putsborough – all sandy beaches with good surf and facilities. Dog friendly beaches are Instow and Saunton. Surf lessons available at main beaches.
The local area
North Devon is one of the most beautiful parts of England and boasts a wide range of coastal and moorland scenery.
Exmoor – truly beautiful moorland and rugged coastline. Exmoor Park Authority put on fantastic events throughout the year that cater to all tastes…most of which are free!! Please see the info guides in the leaflet pack in the lodge.
Valley of the Rocks, Tarr steps, Watersmeet, and Heddon’s Mouth are all attractions worth a visit.
North Devon coast – pebble beaches and coastline pathways.
Abbotsham cliffs, Peppercombe Bay and Hartland Point are just a few of the highlights. Catch the ferry to Lundy Island from Bideford or Ilfracombe.
The Tarka Trail - car-free route alongside Torridge and Taw estuaries for walkers and cyclists. Hire cycles in Bideford or Torrington ..see leaflets.
Dartmoor…a different moorland than Exmoor…scenic points such as Becky Falls, Lydford Gorge and Hay Tor are all more than worth a visit.
Towns and Villages for a day trip
- Clovelly – picturesque cobbled fishing village on steep hillside. (Difficult if mobility issues).
- Hartland Point…great sea views and close up of the lighthouse.
- Lynton and Lynmouth – coastal neighbouring villages linked by cliff railway.
- Ilfracombe – Harbour, Aquarium, Tunnels Beach, sea fishing, Verity…Damien Hearst creation1
- South Molton Pannier Market …food and local produce Thursday mornings.Some lovely shops and cafes…
Family Attractions
You will find various leaflets in the lodge advertising local attractions, and you are ideally placed to visit all of North Devon. The nearest attractions from here are:,), Dartington Crystal and Rosemoor (Torrington direction), ,Atlantis (at Atlantic Village), and the Milky Way, (Bude direction..great for all ages) and Funderzone, Let’s Go (10 pin bowling and skating) and Air extreme, in Barnstaple. Watermouth Castle is fabulous for under 5s.
Broomhill Art Hotel is a lovely place to go…… and for the garden lovers Marwood Gardens is just outside Barnstaple and Castle Hill is near South Molton.

The Plough Theatre in Torrington put on some great performances and in the summer months a few wonderful locations such as the National Trust property at Arlington and Hartland Abbey put on outdoor productions to suit all ages.
